Rock Climbing in San Juan Del Sur - Nicaragua - Click here for map

| |
The Surf Ranch is currently building a 40 ft rock climbing wall. Another new product that we are introducing to Nicaragua. There is nothing like this in the country, and this is just the beginning. For all you rock climbers, the Surf Ranch will be main base. After a warm-up and/or classes, we will bring you to our favorite natural routes. The 40 ft rock wall will have a triangle shape, with 2 walls as different paths, and 1 wall as the gear rental store. There will also be a ladder in the middle to climb up and down to get to and from the viewing platform over looking the tree tops of the beautiful valley.

| Your Instructor - Matt Sabelman
| Born and raised in Menlo Park, Ca our climbing coordinator Matt Sabelman began his life in climbing at a young age. His passion has taken him to climbing spots ranging from the scorching temps of Joshua tree to the freezing waterfalls of Alaska. He is an alumni of the Outward Bound Mountain leadership school based out of Colorado, where he learned mountaineering, survival, guiding, and leadership skills. Moving to Alaska at the age of 20, Matt started working at a local climbing gym. He became an instructor and lead route setter, while on his off time searching the Alaska frontier chasing down new climbing areas.
| |
| |
| Climbing for Matt is definitely a mix of spirituality and love of the sport. “Everything else goes away when your climbing….it’s just you and the rock” he says. Bringing this passion and 14+ years of experience directly to his students here at the Surf Ranch Action Sports Resort. He teaches a variety of classes for those new to climbing and for those looking to extend their skills from multi-pitch, anchor building, and lead climbing.
| Presently Matt splits his time between working in the Alaska Bush as a paramedic and running our climbing tower here in sunny San Juan Del Sur. He hopes to develop climbing in Nicaragua where the sport is virtually unknown and with many potential crags already discovered, the dream is becoming a reality.

“I wanted to build this climbing tower to show the locals of San Juan just how awesome and fun rock climbing can be. There are currently NO climbing routes set up in Nicaragua and the opportunity is staggering. The tower will be a great home base to train and teach others while exploring for that perfect spot. I have already scouted out a few great potential climbing crags and I am totally stoked to start gearing up and setting up some first ascents!”

| |
| |
There are generally two main types of climbing for our tower.
| |
| |
Bouldering
| |
With bouldering you are not usually far from the ground and it focuses more on technique and body positioning. At the tower anyone climbing under the 8 foot line does not need to be tied in. It’s a great way to practice your climbing skills without having to risk your neck!
| |
| |
Roped Climbing
| |
Roped climbing is anytime a climber is attached, through an anchor, to another climber who is belaying them. Our tower has two 16’ wide sections each with their own sets of challenges. On one side we have a gradually outwardly sloping face that ends with an overhang! For those who might find that a little too extreme to start out our beginner/intermediate wall has plenty of fun routes and obstacles to get over to reach the top. Every climber who wishes to belay must first pass a belay test with one of our certified instructors or take our 2 hour belay course.
