SURF RANCH · NICARAGUA
Is San Juan del Sur safe for a family visit?

Make the decision for your own trip
No resort can guarantee safety across a town or at a beach. A travel guide also cannot tell you what conditions will be like on the day you arrive. Before departure, check the current travel advice from your government and consider your family’s needs. If you have specific questions about the resort or a planned activity, ask before booking. Keep a plan for returning to your accommodation even if you decide to leave an outing earlier than expected.
Plan the ride back as well as the ride out
The resort is inland. If your family wants dinner on the waterfront, confirm transport in both directions, the pickup spot and the price before leaving. Surf Ranch does not run a shuttle to or from San Juan del Sur town. Give the adults in your group the resort name and meeting place so that a change of plans does not depend on one person’s phone. Keep your belongings with you when moving between a vehicle, a restaurant and the beach.
A surf beach is not a supervised pool
Remanso is where Surf Ranch teaches surf lessons. That does not mean every part of the beach is suitable for swimming or that the water will be calm. Ask the instructor about conditions for your session. Keep small children with an adult and choose a meeting place on shore. A family member who is unsure about entering the water can enjoy the outing from the sand. The presence of surfers is not a signal that conditions suit a child.
At the resort
Surf Ranch lists security around the clock. At the pool and splash area, children still need supervision from an accompanying adult. If the adults are taking turns, agree explicitly on who is watching before someone leaves the water. Know where reception is, keep your accommodation details available and ask about current conditions before a beach outing. If anyone is in immediate danger, seek local emergency assistance rather than relying on a travel guide.
Arrival day with children
Choose one destination for the first afternoon. If you land in Managua, the resort lists about two hours for the private airport transfer. That estimate starts with the road trip. It does not include waiting for bags or gathering relatives from different flights. Give the driver the resort name, keep the pickup details with more than one adult, and decide who has the bags while the others accompany the children. If the flight runs late, it is fine to save the waterfront walk for another day.
Plan a waterfront visit with a way home
For a family dinner in town, choose a specific meeting point rather than saying you will meet somewhere along the bay. If older relatives want to sit down while the children walk with another adult, make sure both groups know where dinner will be and who is arranging the ride home. Confirm the fare and return pickup before separating. If a child is tired, having that plan already agreed makes it easier to leave early without calling several people to find the driver.
When only part of the family wants to surf
Remanso is the destination for the resort lesson. Maderas is a separate outing that our local guide recommends for intermediate and advanced surfers. Choose the outing for the least experienced participant who actually plans to enter the water. If just one person wants to surf, the whole family does not have to join the lesson. Some can stay by the pool with an adult, or spend time on shore with an agreed meeting place. Ask the instructor about conditions before making a plan for younger children.
Moving between lunch, the splash area and the pool
A common point of confusion is the moment everyone moves. One adult goes to order lunch, an older child wants another turn on the waterslide and a younger child wants to follow. Before leaving the table, name the adult who will accompany each child. If a different adult takes over, tell that person directly and wait for them to agree. The tipping barrel and splash fountains are places to play with supervision. A seat near the water makes it easier to find the family again, but it does not replace an adult alongside a child.
Leaving the coast on departure day
Keep the last morning simple when there is a flight to catch. Breakfast is served from 8 to 10 am, and the room is due back at noon. An early flight may mean leaving well before checkout. Agree on a pickup time with your driver, count luggage and put travel documents where the adult responsible can reach them. If you are using buses, confirm the day’s connections before deciding when to leave. The private airport transfer estimate does not tell you when a bus departs or how long a connection will take.
Frequently asked questions
Can the resort tell me a beach is safe every day?
No. Check conditions on the day and choose activities that match the people in your group. The pool and splash area are alternatives when a beach plan does not fit.
Can we count on a ride back from town?
Arrange your own ride and confirm both directions. Surf Ranch does not operate a town shuttle. An airport pickup or a Remanso lesson ride does not cover a separate dinner trip.
What can we do if the beach conditions do not suit our children?
You can stay on shore or return to the resort for the supervised family pool plan. An adult in your group should accompany the children in the pool and splash area.
Does resort security cover activities outside the property?
The resort lists security on its property. For outings, plan your own transport, check conditions on the day and consult current official travel advice before deciding what suits your family.
