SURF RANCH · TRIP PLANNING

Best time to visit San Juan del Sur

For a trip built around outdoor lunches, beach walks and pool days, start with November through April. If your dates fall in May through October, leave room to move your outings around rain. Surfers should also check the conditions for their particular beach.

01 · THE PACIFIC COAST

Dry season or green season?

San Juan del Sur is on Nicaragua’s Pacific coast. Nicaragua’s environment ministry describes November–April as the drier period and May–October as the wetter period for the region. That distinction matters more for planning a weekend than a single year-round average.

November–April · Drier months

Choose this window if several plans depend on dry weather, such as a full beach morning and sunset on the malecón. November is a transition. In the regional station record below, it still received substantially more rain than February or March.

May–October · Rainier months

A wet-season trip works well if you can swap a surf lesson, a pool session and lunch as the forecast changes. July shows a dip between wetter months in the regional record. Use that as context when picking dates, then check the forecast close to departure.

02 · MONTH BY MONTH

What the Rivas rainfall record shows

Historical mean monthly rainfall in millimeters at the Rivas station, 1969–2004, rounded to the nearest millimeter. This inland station gives regional context. Rain at the resort or a particular surf beach can differ.

January10 mm
February4 mm
March4 mm
April9 mm
May168 mm
June236 mm
July157 mm
August185 mm
September291 mm
October274 mm
November95 mm
December28 mm

February and March were the driest months in this series. September and October were the wettest. Monthly totals don’t tell you which hours it will rain or whether a lesson will run on your dates.

03 · YOUR KIND OF TRIP

Pick dates around the one thing you most want to do

A first surf lesson

Start with Playa Remanso and a lesson that suits your experience. A dry month alone tells you little about wave size or tide. Check with reception before choosing the lesson time, then leave another morning open if conditions change.

A family pool weekend

If a short stay gives you only one full pool day, the drier months offer a better starting point. In the rainy months, leave both mornings flexible and keep lunch movable. Ask reception about conditions before using the splash pad or waterslide.

Time in town and on the coast

For a two-night trip, reserve one outing for the town bay and one for the beach. If rain interrupts the waterfront walk on arrival day, save it for lunch before the drive home. Confirm transport when you set the day’s plan.

04 · BEFORE YOU BOOK

Compare the actual dates, then check the forecast

If price is the deciding factor, search the same room and guest count for two sets of dates. Weekends and holidays can differ, so compare the totals shown for your stay. Direct room bookings include breakfast.

As your trip approaches, check INETER’s short-range forecast for the southern Pacific region. On the day of a surf lesson, confirm the beach and departure time with reception.
